A ship ( Audio (US) (helpĀ·info)) is a large vessel that floats on water. Ships are generally distinguished from boats based on size and cargo or passenger capacity. In traditional terms, ships were considered to be vessels which had at least one continuous water-tight deck extending from bow to stern. However, some modern designs for ships, and boats, have made that particular definition less accurate. Ships may be found on lakes, seas, and rivers and they allow for a variety of activities, such as the transport of people or goods, fishing, entertainment, public safety, and warfare.

Ships and boats have developed alongside mankind. In major wars, and in day to day life, they have become an integral part of modern commercial and military systems. Fishing boats are used by millions of fishermen throughout the world. Military forces operate highly sophisticated vessels to transport and support forces ashore. Commercial vessels, nearly 35,000 in number, carried 7.4 billion tons of cargo in 2007.

These vessels were also key in history's great explorations and scientific and technological development. Navigators such as Zheng He spread such inventions as the compass and gunpowder. Ships have been used for such purposes as colonization and the slave trade, and have served scientific, cultural, and humanitarian needs. New crops that had come from the Americas via the European seafarers in the 16th century significantly contributed to the world's population growth.

As Thor Heyerdahl demonstrated with his tiny craft the Kon-Tiki, it is possible to navigate long distances upon a simple log raft. From Mesolithic canoes to today's powerful nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, ships tell the history of human technological development.

How fast is the distance between the ships moving?
Q. Hello! The question i am trying to answer reads. At noon, ship A is 150km west of ship b. Ship A is sailing east at 35 km/h and ship B is sailing north at 25 km/h. How fast is the distance between the ships changing at 4:00pm.

A. Sounds like a calculus problem. Basically, just find a function that describes the distance of the ships, with respect to time. For example, f(t) = blahblah * t. Then differentiate, and based on how you described t, plug in a value for 4:00PM. Basically, I would use either Pythagorean theorem or maybe treat them as two points in an x, y grid, and use the distance formula.

How did the British raise ships that they sunk when lakes iced over?
Q. In the 1700s, the British kept ships on some of the lakes of America. When winter came they would sink the ships purposely so that they would not be vulnerable when the lake iced over. Once the ice thawed, they were then able to raise the ships. How exactly did this process work?
