How do you start in your specialty after medical school?
Q. All doctors learn the same thing in Medical School, so what happens after that? Is your specialty just by experiance or do you go another school.Im trying to find out more infor about life after medical school. Suggestions for taking the Mcat will also be appreciated.
Asked by Ms.Lala - Sun Jul 9 20:31:57 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. After medical school, graduates will choose what residency they will enroll in. This is how their specialty is chosen. There are many different residencies; internal medicine, pediatrics, family practice, surgery, emergency medicine, just to name a few. Some of these are three year programs, some longer. After residency, some doctors choose to specialize further, in subspecialties such as pediatric cardiology, adult cardiology, or cardiothoracic surgery. These programs, called fellowships, are usually at least 3 years, but can be longer. Hope this helps. As far as the MCAT goes, take as many practice tests as you can. They can be from books or CD-ROMs. Also, I know that Kaplan has a good course, but it is expensive.

How does a Physician Assistant get into a specialty?
Q. I am interested in becoming a Physician Assistant. I would like to be an internal, emergency room, or surgical PA. When do you choose a specialty and start training in that specialty? Also, I am looking into the Stanford PA program. This program emphasizes "underserved" populations and requires the preceptor site to serve "underserved" populations. What does this mean? Also, is this going to be a problem when choosing a specialty by limiting my choices?

A. Once you graduate you start looking for a preceptor who works in the specialty that you want. the underserved populations are just the poor people and most large cities have an area that is deemed underserved, You can still get the specialty area you want pretty easily. If there are a lot of PA students in your area, start early asking people to act as your preceptor. Most won't take more than a few students at a time,

What British law allows specialty British sports car manufacturers to forgo emissions and safety laws?
Q. I understood British automotive laws as having exemptions for specialty automotive manufacturers whereby they were not required to meet emissions or safety standards (presumably because designing and testing for such standards is too costly for small car manufacturers), thus resulting in a large flourishing of specialty sports car manufacturers in the UK. Can anyone verify this?

A. I live in the UK and I am unaware of any laws that allow companies to bypass safety and emission rules. Safety targets and emissions are normally set by the European Union so the UK cannot exempt companies. I am almost 100% sure that this is not true because the larger car companies would be up in arms as to what would constitute a small car firm. Not only that, but if they allowed car manufacturers to bypass safety laws, then the cars would be unsafe. I know for a fact that all cars in the UK have to go through testing before they are allowed out on the road. That is regardless of whether they are made by a manufacturer or by some guy in his shed.
